Academic English Preparation Program
St. John’s Academy has three levels in their AEP Program. All are designed to further the intellectual, social and career development of students by helping them target specific literacy objectives. Our rigorous program will:
- Strengthen students’ ability to communicate fluently in English at school and in the community and
- Students will acquire the English needed to make academic progress within the BC school system and to develop to their potential.
The three levels of the AEP Program are
- Academic English Intro
- Academic English Development
- Academic English Advanced
In each level of our program, students are expected to become proficient in four different strands:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking, and
- Listening
Essential skills are taught is progression to strengthen the foundational understanding of the English Language.
Academic English IntroAcademic English Intro is designed for students who have had little exposure to the English language. It introduces students to the four main language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. In this level, students will be focusing on creating language through phonic and word analysis, and develop a solid understanding of the English Alphabet. At the completion of this level, students will feel confident holding short conversations about everyday topics. They will be able to meet the basic needs of English-Only environment.
80% is needed to pass this course in all the bandwidths listed above.
Academic English Development In this course students are able to maintain interaction and get across what they want to express in a range of contexts, and follow the main points of extended discussion. They can participate in most classroom activities and follow directions. They exhibit growing confidence in their ability to comprehend and respond in English, express the main point coherently and comprehensibly with little grammatical and lexical corrections.
80% is needed to pass this course in all the bandwidths listed above.
Academic English Advanced This course allows students to easily participate in classroom and social activities, constantly adding to their knowledge of vocabulary, Canadian culture, and language usage proficiency. Students are able to account for and sustain their opinions in discussion by providing relevant explanations, arguments, and comments. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity as they acquire a new degree of language awareness.
There is a test at the end of this course.
Students must receive 80% in the reading, writing and speaking portion before they can move into English 10.
